First blacks 08/19/2010
We got to try our first cherokee purple and black krim this week. The cherokee was as great as we remembered from last year with a deep flavor and so juicy. Something about a cherokee purple brings the thought of velvet to mind when tasting them. The black krim was great as well, a bit more of a tangy bite to it. Add Comment Basil Pesto 08/18/2010
We are growing around 100 basil plants this year. This morning's basil harvest. Along with olive oil, toasted nuts, garlic and a food processor. Our finished pesto ready for the freezer. Cherokee Purple Starting to Blush 08/13/2010
We were excited to find a cherokee purple starting to show signs of blushing this morning. These are one of our favorite tomatoes and it's nice to see some of the larger tomatoes starting to turn. Sunflowers 08/11/2010
1st Ripe Early Wonder 08/07/2010
When we ordered some seeds from Tomato Growers Supply Co this year, they sent us a free packet of Early Wonder tomatoes. The description of it is it's an extra-early maturing, compact variety that makes an impressive crop of round, dark pink tomatoes with an average weight of 6 ounces. They have excellent, full tomato flavor, and earn their name since it is a wonder when an early variety tastes this good. It's a determinate with a dtm of 55 days. We harvested our first 68 days after we transplanted it in our garden. We have 2 plants growing this year and they are compact little guys and each have over 40 tomatoes on them. It definitely tasted better than a store bought tomato and it was nice to have a ripe tomato early. It'd be great for someone in a short season or who didn't have a lot of room for plants as it's so compact. Giant Marigolds 08/02/2010
When we joined Daves Garden site, they sent us a bunch of flower seeds and these giant marigolds were included. We've planted a bunch of them in some of the bales with the tomatoes and the bees and butterflies are enjoying them as much as we are. Finally a ripe tomato 08/01/2010
We got our first ripe tomato of the year. It's a Black Cherry. Even as small as it was and cut in half so we each could enjoy it, it tasted great and we're eager for more to get ripe! First of August 08/01/2010
We're starting August with most everything finally planted. We've named this the summer of planting and replanting. The bales all have cooled down and we've got the poor plants who were moved over and over finally in place as well as have started some fall greens and late green beans. End of July 07/25/2010
Just a few photos of the garden. Paragraph. Garden Update 07/15/2010
The alfalfa bales are taking their sweet time at cooking down to be ready to plant. Many are finally getting down to about 100 degrees so it shouldn't be much longer. The rest of the garden is doing great. |
